Welcome to purposeful living today. Hope you are having an amazing week. You are destined to reign. We honour and celebrate you.

"Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends." John 15:13.

The challenge we have in  building friendship is that we have lost the understanding of the value of friendship. There is a shift of purpose from what is profitable to what is not necessary, many focus on things such as appearance, wealth, social status etc. The friendship of David and Jonathan shows us what is actually required for building and maintaining friendship. Friendship is not just built on the foundation of love but also on love, commitment, respect and trust.
From the lives of David and Jonathan I discovered what is actually required to build friendship.
Now let's  look at the friendship of David and Jonathan:

"1.And it came to pass, when he had made an end of speaking unto Saul, that the soul of Jonathan was knit with the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul.
2.And Saul took him that day, and would let him go no more home to his father's house.
3. Then Jonathan and David made a covenant, because he loved him as his own soul.
(1Samuel 18:1-3).

The  basic requirement for friendship is love. Love is not just a feeling but an act of affection. Love is the willingness to positively affect the lives of those we love, this is why Jesus Christ affected our lives by laying His life for us so that we can walk in the fullness of life in Him (John 15:13-15).

Jonathan loved David as he loved himself, the love they had for each other made them to enter into a covenant of unconditional love, devotion and service to each other and their families for example Jonathan decided to  live the kingdom for David who was not a Prince and  was ready to serve as the second in command when David becomes a king, Jonathan left the kingdom which he was supposed to be king after his Father King Saul to David. Let me remind you of their background because so many of us have lost great friends on the stand of prestige, pride, wealth, appearance and social status. David was a Shepherd boy whose family was not among the royal class, and had no recognition in Israel. Jonathan on the other hand was a Prince and the supposed Successor of King Saul. He was from a royal family, the number one family in Israel. Their friendship began after David killed Goliath, their background had no similarity but still yet they were best of friends .
This is how Jonathan proofed his love for David:
"And Jonathan stripped himself of the robe that was upon him, and gave it to David, and his garments, even to his sword, and to his bow, and to his girdle"
( 1 Samuel 18:4).

Let's us see how Jonathan maintained and build stronger friendship:
1. He stripped Himself from His robe ( His Royalty): This means he stripped himself of his Royal status giving it to David, he was not concerned about him succeeding his Father King Saul as the the king of Israel. He submitted to the will of God, knowing that God has said David will be the next king of Israel.
How many of us will submit to our friends, when we know that they are going to be greater than us? How many of us will not be jealous of our friends because of their achievements? Do you have  friends that are very proud of who they are, that they make you feel inferior? This is not the kind of friendship God wants from you. Build friendship that develop the both of you to become great personalities in life. Don't be jealous of anyone and don't act in pride when God takes you higher in life.
2. His Sword and Bow (His Authority):
Jonathan gave David his amour of war, he was not afraid of David harming him. He stood in defense for David and was against King Saul his Father.
Love makes us submit to our friends, we tell them secrets about us that we can't tell other people. This is because of the security we feel when in the company of friends. We need to always honour and respect our friends.

3. He gave him his belt (His Loyalty): The belt of truth means his loyalty to the truth, this truth was the future of David as king of Israel, he covenanted himself to ensure that David becomes the king of Israel, his  loyalty was wholly to David not to his father, he protected David from the plans of his father to kill him.
We must be loyal to the destiny of our friends,  ready to go the extra mile for the dreams of our friends to be a reality. As a friend you should be ready to defend the integrity of your friends, even if it will cost you. Our friends should be able to trust us, if they fail we fail if they succeed we succeed.

To build and maintain Friendship is sacrificial it involves we laying down our lives by this I mean we giving our best for our friends.

You can't build friendship until you come into the experiential knowledge of the friendship of Jesus Christ who loved you more than yourself. Surrender to the friendship of Jesus Christ today.

You can begin a relationship now with the Lord Jesus Christ who loves you more than anyone on earth and will lead you to a man who will value you by saying this prayer:

Lord Jesus Christ  I acknowledge that I am a sinner,  I believe in your death and resurrection.  I ask you forgive me my sins,  I reject the devil and all his works and l welcome the Holy Spirit into my life.  I declare today I am born again and I am a child of God in Jesus name. Amen.

If you just said that prayer I welcome you to God's family. Look for a Bible believing church where God's word is taught and fellowship there.
