Welcome to purposeful living today. We are always here to share with you life's principles, inspire you to live to the fullest of who your Creator created you to be as you build Godly relationships, have healthy marriages and enjoy your life's experiences. Today, we shall be looking at one of life's issues which is self control. Many have missed it in life because of this simple, yet powerful means of being all you have been created to be. No wonder "self-control" is mentioned in the Bible as one of the fruit of the Spirit. (Galatians 5:23). We shall however have a concise view of the power in self control.

"He who guards his mouth and his tongue, Guards his soul from troubles"
( Proverbs 21 :23).

Self- control as defined is the ability to control impulses and reactions, and is another name for self- discipline.
It is not some kind of negative and limiting behavior , as some people might think. When self-control is used wisely and with common sense, it becomes one of the most important tools for self improvement and for achieving success.

It is the ability to say "no " and "enough" to yourself, and to abstain from harmful extremes of behavior, action , eating or doing anything that might be harmful for you and for others.

Self control is vital for overcoming obsessions , fears , addictions, and any kind of unsuitable behavior. It puts you in control of your life, your behavior , and your reactions. It improves your relationships, develops patience and tolerance, and is an important tool for attaining success and happiness .

Also, Self- control is the ability to control oneself, in particular one ’s emotions and desires or the expression of them in one’s behavior, especially in difficult situations . We are told in 1 John 4: 4, “You, dear children, are from God and have over come them,  because the one who lives in you is greater than the one who is in the world”.

The Holy Spirit, which lives in us, empowers us to resist any temptation/ lust of the world if we yield to Him .
Apostle Paul writes to the church in Thessalonica on how they should live, “that each of you should learn to control your own body in a way that is holy and honorable, not in passionate lust like the pagans, who do not know God;” (1 Thessalonians 4 :4 -5 ).
Paul, was telling them to live in a way that please God. One way to please God with our life is to practice self- control. Self- control is achieved when we deny ourselves those things which do not promote the goodness of God.

From the above explanation, we see how self control helps us to achieve success in life as well as living the kind of life God wants us to live on earth. Self control is a virtue that helps us become the greatness we are made to be. It is likened to a ladder that takes a person far in the height of greatness in life. Let us briefly see below how self control helps us generally in life and conduct..

1.  It keeps in check self-destructive, addictive, obsessive and compulsive behavior.
2.  Gives you a sense of mastery over your life, and brings balance into your life.
3.  Self- control helps to keep over -emotional responses in check or moderation.
4.  Self- control eliminates the feeling of helplessness and being too dependent on others.
5.  It helps to manifest mental and emotional detachment, which contributes to peace of mind .
6.  It enables us to control moods and reject negative feelings and thoughts.
7.  Self- control strengthens self-esteem, confidence, inner strength, self- mastery and willpower .
8.   It enables you to take charge of your life.
9.   It makes you a responsible and trustworthy human being.
10. It Strengthens Your Willpower & Self Discipline

You can deliver yourself from the snares/lusts of this life by practicing self-control but there are Obstacles to Self-Control just as there are obstacles to attaining success and achieving your dreams. These often times is what many "would-be" legends and heroes neglect and finally end up as a mediocre. Life is all about principles and you cannot live an unprincipled life and expect the result that a principled life produces. Below are some of the obstacles to living a self controlled life:

1.  Lack of knowledge and understanding of what self-control really is.
2.  Strong and uncontrolled emotional responses.
3.  Reacting to outside stimuli , without thinking first.
4.  Lack of discipline and willpower.
5.  Lack of the desire to change and improve.
6.  Considering self- control as a limiting and unpleasant activity.
7.  The belief that self control eliminates fun.
8.  Lack of faith in oneself and in one' s abilities.

With the look out of these points, we see the power there is in self control to be great in life and also in living a purposeful life on earth. In two days time, we shall be sharing on developing and building self control because it's in us as human beings.

My friend, I challenge you this day to hold on to this knowledge of self control that you have been enlightened on this day. It could be God's way of preparing you for something great. God wants the best for us always and that is why whatever He allows in our lives is for a purpose. If you are not acquainted with your Creator, you will not be able to live a self controlled life and enjoy the power that comes with it.

Jeremiah 29:11 tells us that God's plans for us are plans of good, and not of evil. If you have not made Jesus Christ who loves you dearly as your Lord and personal saviour, why not say this prayer below:.

Lord Jesus Christ I acknowledge that I am a sinner, I believe in your death and resurrection. I ask you to forgive me my sins, I reject the devil and all his works and l welcome the Holy Spirit into my life. I declare today I am born again and I am a child of God in Jesus name .Amen . If you just said that prayer I welcome you to God's family. Look for a Bible believing church where God's word is taught and fellowship there.
